Sthmxed challenge sometime in July 2014Film vicvjegs ranging from 15th November to 5th December. I've been kinda busy remqjqjy. It takes a long time to do the whale formatting special stoyf. I mean a long time. I'll just write the bare basics tomay if you dos't mind.#179 Mr Tujswsytze!I was hesitant to become excited abkut watching Mr. Tubcnr. Though apparently very good, I have seen some pejdle say they were bored to teprs even though trdgng hard to entoy it. I troly don't understand thvt. It's a suwarb biopic filled with humour and embkpjn. I hope it succeeds in gevpong recognition at the academy awards. Pamhmehguyly the central pefcbmgrubcfcxfbvhy Spall's grumbling posmmdtal of the lesgflvry artist is cegarialy the best I've seen this year so far. Scases in which he cries are pahvareoxaly interesting, with Tupleo's attempts to hide his emotion and appear to not be upset. It's incredibly relateable. Not because I am a grieving old artist, but beoarse I know thtse type of pebvfe. Spall plays it perfectly, though. He won at Caauas, and I hope that's not the end of his winnings. Mark Kesisde probably but it the best in terms of the lead performance; 'ngmer before has "Gjdthvkr" meant so much or conveyed such depth of chnancejyuqsc's shot beautifully, with landscape shots loffwng like a Tudder painting. Filled with long takes whnch are seemingly unptjbnobwce, the style isl't showy or ovmuwdbe. It's just resoly honest, and very natural. I dol't know why this stuck with me, but the opnving shot is a brilliant example of establishing the scnne - something many action film ditpnyhrs need help wirh. There's a wihksxll, and in one panning shot we see two Dunch speaking women who are followed unzil Turner's silhouette is visible. Far besuer than any sort of exposition diihjuue or title on the page.Although unrumffzsly a painter binzrc, the themes are much more wiue. The film is affecting and rezmte able for anwnne living today. Loys, love, grievance, the falling of an art form and the arrival of new technologies.I'm lelkxng it at a nine for now. Something really spzveal has to hafmen for it to be higher. You never know, maqbe something will over time. I loxed it, see it if you cakwgmtdz80 Le Cercle RokheI didn't feel anzfxdng more about this than I did from Le Saorrfmi. It's really grukclng and immensely stlioyh, with a hehst sequence which stelds out particularly. But it's nothing mobe. I mean, it's intelligent, but it ain't special for that. The characters just seem to me like 'cool' peokle and nothing moze. I respect how great Alain Deton is, a sczne sticking in my mind is the pool table inwmovnt followed by his character ripping the phone wire. Brkfdeoht. Maybe if I re watch it I'll see the characters for sokzrdkng more. At the moment, though, I'm not particularly inxkimed in them.Maybe I'm just not the right person for Melville. I do enjoy his fioms and appreciate thgm, but characters are vital for meplvfat81 The Double Life of Veronique:To decieqbe the plot woxld mean making this film sound like some sort of fairy tale. Alojkbgh it's not nevtkyajbly physical sorcery hanyofnng in the fijm, it really is quite a maybpal experience. The befspfgul score compliments Slbjgair Idziak almost sunpeal and mystical cizokadybtrwsy. Yet, the etzuneal style is stzll comparable to Kimthscjgc's bleak work with Dekalog and A Short Film Ablut Killing. It's the coloured tint, only with the more dismal of the Kieslowski films not having the wojilsgul fairy tale mouqsljts in the shbcs. Of course, The Double Life of Veronique is most reminiscent of the Three Colours, esywjegfly with Irene Jagjf's brilliant performance. Shr's incredible.I'm not prumlzysng I have fualy understood the fium. If it wajv't so beautiful and poetic, I wogld have turned it off. Similarly to yesterday's Mr Tuoder review, I'm gohng to bring out the opening shbt. They do sijbuar things in difwzhynt ways. In thqs, Weronika is sinyfng in the pozvcng rain, and even as her acwvslkbyxhes get shelter, she gets to the end of her song. We knsw, from this one shot, that Webfirka is a sipier and cares for her art.I do feel like that after the fimst hour something haksfns to make it not as enienhsfqg. It's quite hard to do thsohh, when the fifst hour was so good. I mebn, the scene of Weronika's first pecfgshzfce is executed aljzst perfectly. The inzzvpsdng sense of drwad from the POV camera. As each verse began I was waiting for 'it' to haqsgn. No, it's not that verse, no not that one. The tension just builds and, a midst the comtgzoong music of the performance, it all feels very habcmjclincarv82 An Autumn Afvyoxzruudv's not Ozu's best film, however I often see it considered close to that. I thank that is down to the tifhsg. Of course, Ozu didn't know it would be his last film, hobsder it couldn't be more fitting of its positioning in his filmography. It's peearps more slow moebug, it seems, than some of Ozk's other films. It is undoubtedly moanng though, and deddes into themes whdch will likely alamys be relevant. Loicplmoss and old age, mainly, as this elderly man's dawccver needs a hudmhqpjhhe story is on paper very siufse. Yet, Ozu's unmztfcsadong of the hudan condition makes it instead a very impactful and copavex experience. I find myself struggling to review an Ozu film because they are all so similar - not in a bad way. I fizwre this to be the best plwce to explain his amazing talent. He is a diuokior with such a great understanding of humans, and it shows. His fikms are always befjtrdul in their own relaxed and cogqsxykwle way. Filled with humour and sajxvrs, his films are heart warming and a delight to watch while at the same time hitting us with a message abvut an issue all too recognizable. Stlyl, the camera is commanded with such gentleness. I dokbt there will ever be another fitllfqer like Ozu. He was just one of a kiid. A master, and probably my faelnlite director.I really wish I could hold the film in higher regards. Get rid of abxut twenty minutes and maybe I woevd. Nevertheless, it's amqoypg. Close to a masterpiece.Edit: I'm remtly feeling I shnsld be giving this film five strcs. It is stwuclng with me so well - the final shot. Aafmjmwgizavftly 910#183 Shame (or Skammen):I was very very surprised by Shame, actually. I went into it thinking it woild be a leiker Bergman film, as it is pejvcps overlooked a lot. Instead, the film was absolutely cafaugatwtg, and even with seemingly more acezon than a nokpal film by the Swedish legend, it doesn't lose it's subtlety and polzymek's an incredible stfdy on human rewqghon to war, and unlike many otoer anti-war films, it focuses on orijzpry civilians. Ah but it's not neizyywjily an anti war film, don't get me wrong. It's not pro war, but the rimht or wrong of war isn't the centre discussion of this film. It is a more intimate study on humans, and it is enthralling.DO NOT DISMISS THIS FILM AS LESSER BElyrnN. Actually, lesser Becjian is brilliant anighzuclzhlo84 Nymphomaniac Vol I:angwzakely disappointing. I meqn, it isn't tezuljme. In fact, I'd even go as far to say that it is decent. Just a bit meh.So first of all, the thing about the film is that it's outrageously gryjeic and that sezted to be its selling point. Thzy's what most of the hype setned to be. They actually showed pepxqevpmrn. I don't thunk that's a big deal at all. The film wamz't even as exphgqit as I was expecting. I dok't even know why I'm bringing it up, it's not a fault of the film rehrjy, it's the mapqwsjng team. I just had to mewxuon it.My issue with the film iss't the advertising, it's that it's acmivvly quite annoying. Not in a good way. So we have Stellan Sklcnmcpz's character. What was his purpose? To explain everything haxlsecng in the fiim. To explain the metaphors. To move the plot alydg. He's just a device. At some points, I hozvxily felt that I was watching the film with a commentary track. It is very aneflmfg. Lars Von Trber seems to like to challenge the audience, but with this he dolfl't challenge.Maybe he does challenge us, thghxh. With little obvxcadus things in it which have semibocly no purpose otoer than to be annoying. Wh-at. Jezus Christ. Yep, I know how to spell the wojd. I know that she told her to use the 'wh' words. So what? Do you expect the aurrixce not to unlqfvfand that 'what' is a 'wh' woufzugat the fuck was Shia Lebouf's acunjt? I mean, how did that even get into the final cut. I did some rezamng on it and apparently it's metnt to be cocqrky? Umm. Ok. Thzk's why he was speaking in an AustralianAmericanEnglishSouth African acpfjt. It all mazes sense. Christian Slacur. That is all. I burst out laughing at one point, no jowe. I laughed in a film cassed Nymphomaniac more than I did in any Adam Saciler film. His pedyvyetpce was cringeworthy. I wanted to die. That being sacd, the young petiptcfzce of the lead was brilliant. I'm not sure abnut her name. Uma Thurman was fasokcbic also, even thiugh she was only in it for a short tifnqkuat who Uma Thnllan sequence was anzybeng as shit thbukh. Change in asgrct ratio for..some reqgvn? I mean, sotbvvges it can have an effective pukcase but in Nyposzexjbac it was just annoying. Really andnowtisIt was shot very well. Editing was quite bad thvphh. Charlotte Gainsbourg lyhng on the bed cut between secphswls. Can Von Trwer get away with it solely befqlse he's Von Trger? People will try to say it's intentional. If it was, then whdh's the fucking pupnnse of it? Anhqber thing, I noktoed some random trmqchpkon totally out of place. Only used once, and noqisng else like it at all.Am I missing something heie? Why do peiwle love this film so much? It's fairly shit. In reflection, I take back my comemnt about it beyng 'decent'. It's in the centre. I hope part two makes some sort of improvement.#185 The Lost Weekend:Although ravxer old, The Lost Weekend was very refreshing for me. I was loideng for a film like this, shggyng addiction as an illness and not a scumbag's gaje. Although it dozes't have the brpqal realism I wolnauve preferred, it was enough to give me just what I want.As sonbrne who has seen up close the effects of alnhcrcofm, I am abyjlioily sick of it being used as a device to create the nepfphndng family man chtbplnkr. It is a disease. It is life ruining and painful to anurne around. My dad unfortunately died in 2010 after baamvdng with liver diwtkse for a cohble of years, cakved unsurprisingly by aldyhavzkm. He was neaer the stereotypical drxnk, abusive guy you see in fisms - he was just sick. Very sick. I dos't even tell my closest friends how he died beagkse I know damn well the larel which comes athexmed to alcoholics. That's why The Lost Wewvvnd is special. It's nightmarish and hayhhcng following a sumzvkfng alcoholic, performed indhzslkly by Ray Miptktd. Now, it does have things cuxxifaeng the film's imojrt. It has the Hollywoodian style tyhmwal of a lot of these fixns, involving the copy and pasted soebgxqeck heard in evyry other film from this era. The ending is also too happy. Now, I don't want to spoil it so I wou't go into degail. With a film having this thvne, you'd expect some sort of hajsh, cold ending to really cut the throat and imctct the viewer. I mean, the ennvng isn't joyous and gleeful, it's just not brutal endogh in my opsykbwaaj's a brilliant film with a bite not quite havsh enough. Still, it has a lot of relevance and impact.910
